It probably only exists so the code for the OS stays independant of the architecture.

If they really do port OSX to x86 (which I doubt), I'd be willing to throw it on my junk box to play with.

Damn j00! I was about to post that once I got back from giving a lab assistant a break! Wink

I think it's interesting. Fully Hilarious actually, should they be forced to use it. (triply-ultrium-supar hilarious if they just try to sell it on it's own merits...)

But you have a point, it could be for hardware independence.

The article made a mistake when it said that application writers would have to write their apps on OSX-x86 from scratch in Cocoa. There's no reason why Carbon won't be ported too, if the entire OS is anyway. Apps will, however, require a recompile on OSX-x86 in order to work.

But I still think The Steve wants to squeeze Motorola a bit first before making the jump, and when they do, they'll do something to make sure generic x86 boxen can't join the party. Sure, someone will crack it, but it will be profoundly unsupported on non-Apple x86 hardware.

I still think we should keep an eye on Motorola.

I have a friend who knows a marketing grunt there. The grunt works late, tho', and works side by side with the VP o' Marketing.

VP told him some big shit is going down.

???

If that big shit is the RSN of releasing the 90nm process a full two quarters+ before Intel, Motorola would definitely have *something* to give to Apple.

No?

RSN?

Maybe.

Marketing people never know anything. VPs of marketing even less so.

That "big shit" could also easily be "the company" -- as in, "The company is going down."

Such a situation would seem more probable and realistic, IMNSHO.

Marketing != advertising.

Marketing analysts simply compile purchase and customer data and decide which markets/prices/venues/promotions are most feasible for the corporation.

How is that lying?

You're thinking of advertising, which isn't lying either, unless you're AOL.

Can we stop the infantile and, yes, let's face it, ignorant Marketing bashing?

Read the "Cluetrain manifesto". Marketing is lying. Communities of real people know the truth about products, which marketing people can no longer hide from them thanks to the Internet.

Yo....I read the cluetrain manifesto as well. It is a must read.

Now, back OT, I would love to give OSX a shot on my PC. I certainly aint gonna fork over for a fucking Mac just to run it. I still use a PII 400 for shit's sake. I can barely afford another PC let alone a Mac. If I came into some money, I might buy one, maybe a nice iBook or a Tibook since they seem more like appliances than laptops IMO.....

My G4 400 cost me less than $350 U.S., just under 200 for a Beige G3 233 (which was actually, to my surprise, a 333) and just under $150 for a G4 400 upgrade. Admitedly, I had some extra RAM, a larger hard drive, and a CD-RW/DVD combo drive which I installed, but I could have gotten by without these.

Jaguar cost me just over $119 U.S., more than a third of the price of my Mac.

Agree that the portables, especially the iBook, are among the most compelling Macs. I also like the new dual-867, but now that PowerLogix is selling dual-867 modules too, I wonder if I shouldn't start bidding on Quicksilver boards on Ebay.

that's not too bad then. i have nothing against old equipment. in fact, i would rather acquire second hand/surplus than buy new. not because i'm cheap (although i am), but because it is tinkerage++.

As to tinkerage, the Beige G3 will take an ATX PSU (there's a jumper for it), but only has three PCI slots, and you'll eventually want to upgrade the disk access (it starts at vanilla IDE, somewhat slower than the ATA100 or 133 we all know and love, much less modern Ultra SCSI), add USB, and possibly get a PCI video card capable of using QuartzGL (Apple disables this on PCI cards, but there is a hack to enable it, and it evidently does make a noticable difference). If you try to build one up from parts, be aware that there are a lot of small bits the motherboard needs which most dealers sell seperately.

The Blue & White G3 is more capable and expandable, but it's also way more expensive. Toss up. What I'm considering now is rolling my own with a Powerlogix dual module on a refurbished Quicksilver board. Would have to build a PSU converter though, so I'm interested to see how radiosaw's home-built G4 experiment, detailed in the Mac Ach, will turn out.

From the review of OS X 10.2, referring specifically to Quartz Extreme's windowing technology:
Quote:

It was actually possible to work comfortably all day on the G4/800 with nicely rendered fish swimming around on the desktop.

Color me impressed. (Maybe not jaw droppingly, I just wanted to use the emoticon.)
