That's kind of the point, Riso. Apple should have gone with PCIe.

I'm not just talking about processor upgrades, d00d. Who's going to bother writing PPC OS X drivers for -- say -- sound cards? Nobody, because the market is comprised of approximately me. Nobody's going to even manufacture actual PCI-X cards, so as PCIe takes over the market I'll have fewer and fewer choices... |
The question you should ask is this: If Apple moved slower in the transition, or did not move at all, where would the mac market be if hardware continued to be a problem for them? You have to admit, Mac OS X and iLife on it's own is a pretty good selling point; but you also have to admit that the PPC hardware has been to stagnant. I really honestly hoped the G5 would be the saving grace and keep Apple competitive. The situation hasn't turned out that way. While I feel for your situation, I still can't avoid the fact that Apple was caught in rut and changes needed to be taken, and worse, we all know that people to pay the price for the change will be current mac consumers like you. So the problem becomes one of utility: the greatest good for the greatest number. Or, one of altruism: everyone is taken care of and wins. Which one is more realistic?
I say keep your head up if you can and enjoy your mac. It's a sweet machine I think, and I doubt it will stop being any sweeter if you can keep doing what you're doing. All the current audio card developers for the mac won't stop developing because that market alone is pretty damn big and important to them. I've seen an audio studio with stacks of Powermac G5's and my jaw dropped. Damn impressive stuff. So you're not alone in the audio side of things.
Graphics cards: It's been pretty bad the last few years anyway, but I doubt you won't be able to get a decent upgrade in the future.
Network cards, you'll be able to get no problem. That's almost a guarantee. Getting SATA and SCSI cards, almost a guarantee there too.
CPU upgrade... well, if IBM can produce anything faster, you'd probably see upgrade cards too, depending on how easy it is to get supplies.
Besides, in 5-7 years time, you'll be married and trying to conceive a child on that sex swing you own; having more responsibilities; and hopefully making great music, and being to busy as rock star to have any type of geek angst. It happens, and I know cause it happened to me. I just stopped caring with what I need and did what I had to do with what I have, because it was more important to me to go out and have fun with girls, making music, and whatever I felt defined me more then a job and the needs of the jobs ever could. So yeah, you're a musician and you have a great girl, so focus on that, and just hope that if you really need to upgrade your powermac G5, you'll be able too.
And remember in 5-7 years time, when you're a famous musician in Canada, that I get to jam with you and have fun with your female fans all because I gave you that pep talk above.

I and many other mac users agree with you there. So did Apple eventually as it moved to PCIe in their powermac G5 and is even used on the iMac G5.
Wait a second, I just realized: I was under the assumption you had one of the latest Powermac G5. I'm guessing you got one of the earlier models. dang.

MacBookPro:
1) 15" only: meh.
2) On the other hand, Apple has never put a decent screen in a 12".
3) MacBookPro is a very silly name.
4) Too heavy.
5) Overall though, a nice machine.
6) Who wants to be the guinea pig for 1st gen hardware?
7) Due to 4 and 6, will most likely wait and see what comes out in the first revision and what (if any) Intel iBooks emerge.

Wait a minute. How is 2.5kg too heavy? It's the same as the G4 Powerbook.

OW, I wasn't talking about what would be good for Apple, I was talking about what would be good for me.
Don't worry, all things considered I'm very happy with my life. Obviously I'd like my father back, but apart from that things are very good for me. (Sorry to be maudlin there for a moment.) On the computer front my machine does indeed serve me very well now. I was just pointing out that there are certainly people for whom Magus' statement more or less holds -- my hardware was made obsolete more or less when the switch was announced. That isn't the end of the world, but for people like me who own Revision A or B G5 systems, it could certainly be better.
Will this move be better for Apple? We'll see. I'm not sure it'll work, but I hope so.

Actually, Steve Jobs said at the keynote that the entire Macintosh product line would be moved to Intel before the end of the year. I think that's pretty much the death sentence for PM G5 upgrades.
