Sad
So as some of you know, I've had a pretty bad back for the last year and a half. Basically a slipped disc where for the most part, it required rest, pilate and traction for it to get better. However, three weeks ago, I basically blew my back out. A week after I hurt my back again, the stiffness in my lower back went away, but then I noticed my left leg had this constant pain which lasted for a week before I decided to call the doctor. Turns out the guy I go to (sports specialist) was on holiday till the first week of Jan. Great. I ask for another doctor from the same sports clinic and that doctor was out for a week too.
The sports clinic I prefer to go to takes care of almost all the major sports teams in HK, including the HK rugby team (they play in the Rugby Sevens). The staff not only speaks prefect english - compared to the broken english in hospitals here in HK - but the doctors also have more experience in the area which I needed to be taken care off. Hence why I decided to wait for the doctors to return instead of going to other clinics in HK.

Long story short:
Saw the doctor yesterday. He did some tests, including the hammer on the knee where my left leg didn't react at all.
Had an x-ray where my spine was okay. Good news.
Had an MRI today, and the results show that my disc is slipped out so much that it's pinching my nerves and on a scale of ten, where ten is pretty damn bad, mine is a 7-8.
I have an appointment at the doctor on Monday, but I asked the doctor at the center where I had my MRI taken to tell the staff at the sports clinic to get me an earlier appointment as soon as the results get to them. It takes around two days apparently, so I'll give them a call myself anyway.

That's about it really. I have pain killers that work on the nerves, so it's sorta numbed down the pain a bit, but it still hurts a lot. It's also why I haven't smammed as much the last few weeks on OSY. I can't sit in the first place. I have to lie in bed and use my laptop. Does amazing wonders for the neck *sarcasm* especially when I get up and find my neck is as stiff as my back. Ha ha ha!

All in all, i'm okay. A tiny bit of depression creeps in once a in a while, but otherwise, i'm all good.
Shall see what the doctors say on monday.

One of the things I look for in a doctor is not only their honesty, but also their desire to try a range of methods to solve problems and eliminate them. I've had bad experiences, where I was immediately sent for a series of test, advised to do some pretty big surgery, but my instincts made me say no, and in the end, it turns out I did the right thing.
Some doctors are fucking crazy. They only want the money or the chance to cut people open I think. I hate that.

Then there are doctors that see surgery as the last option and invasive tests as only if needed. I like that. Also, to me, experience in a field goes a long way. No way am I going to go to a family doctor for the problem I had, only to be given some analgesic, told to rest, and a pat on the back. Which, incidentally, was what happened the first time. The second time, my friend recommended the sports clinic which I went to, and they did a series of non-invasive, simple tests, which at the time, showed the problem was not severe. I then did physiotherapy and the problem went away. I was also told to continue on my own the exercise I was taught by them, but sheer laziness I regret to say, I never really did them too often, and with as much effort. The things they make you do for the muscles in the back and the abs ain't easy at all. For some I can compensate with my chest and arms, which I work out on more at the gym, but then my trainer yells at me to not cheat. Which is okay, cause she's cute, and I like a girl that's feisty. Laughing Off course he who laughs last, laughs, not at all... ermm.. how does that figure of speech go? I forget.

Good luck. I hurt my back a few months ago and couldn't walk for two days, so I dread to think how you're getting on.

In other news, I finally got a guitar. Cheap shit, but hey.

It's not to bad with appropriate amount of pain killers and alcohol. Just a word of advice: DO NOT MIX ALCOHOL WITH ASPIRIN. Man that was a bad idea when I did it. My stomach hurt like a bitch for a few days after I had a heavy drinking night after I had taken something like 6 aspirins earlier during the day.

I have some chronic back issues due to a car wreck, I know it's not as severe as yours, but I do hope everything goes well and a speedy recovery.

Thank you all for your support. I appreciate it. I did some reading about the type of surgery I may have and it seems that depending on the type of injury I have, either they cut of part of the disc that's protruding and touching my nerves or they remove it completely and fuse the spine together. Shocked Shall see what the doctor says on monday. Not happy about having surgery near my nerves where there is always the risk of it being injured or damaged during surgery and me getting possibly paralyzed. Sad
Damn it.

Ouch! Good luck, dude!

How did you injure yourself to start with? Lifting obese midgets (aka human bowling balls) in an inappropriate way? Razz

My best mate from uni has a slipped disc, but I suspect not as severe as yours. Anyway, for about a year he could hardly exercise at all. Now he runs half-marathons every weekend, so getting over this sort of thing is certainly doable.

Anyway, hope it all works out OK, and enjoy the nurses! Wink

Hope everything turns out okay OW. You know, human beings were never meant to stand upright. Our backs were jury-rigged from a system that was only ever meant to support horizontal loads. Damn you, evolution!

How do you figure that? My counter example is that I can carry a lot more weight when my spine is vertical than when horizontal.

Perhaps as much as two million years. However, evolutionary theory holds that mammals had been on all fours for millions upon millions of years before that, and while we have largely adapted to walking upright, our backs are not entirely suitable:

Quote:
But we are by no means perfectly adapted to bipedal locomotion. Our spines are a heritage from distant ancestors who carried themselves horizontally, in water and on land. In those ancient creatures, as in modern quadrupeds, the spine functioned more like a flexible suspension bridge, supporting the body's organs -- a role to which it is structurally well suited. The human spine has been transformed into a weight bearing column, putting it under unprecedented stresses and dooming us to the likelihood of back injuries and pain.

As remarkable as our adaptations for bipedalism are, they are, like all evolutionary transformations, a compromise with history.

Hopefully by the time evolution takes it's final effect and we can walk upright better than on all fours, the aliens that built the pyramids would have come back and taken us all away for anal probes.

On a serious note, what animal carries things on their back, minus young, that we humans don't put there?

And, of course, this all assumes that you put some value into the Theory of Evolution... Some of us still believe that we have been this way since the 5th day that the world existed.
But what do we know? We're just religious nuts who believe that a being higher than ourselves, "God," if you will. And in doing so, we reject the idea that things "just happened" in the right order, at the right time, and in the right place under the right conditions.
We reject the idea that all life, the thousands upon thousands of being on this planet, all originated from a singular or a small number of single-cell organisms which evolved and transformed themselves into complex, multiple-cell, multiple-system beings. And all of this with nothing but the will to survive as the thing that drove them! Wow! Who knew that an ancient single-cell organism could have a complex thought?! I mean, current single-cell organisms can't...
And why did they evolve into so many different species? And so many different types of species? I mean, sure, we can see where something that stayed in the water would have to be different than something that lived on land. But why are there thousands of fish, and water-bound mammals, and amphibians, and reptiles? And why in the crap are there flying animals?! What purpose would an evolving creature have in the sky?! And insects? I mean, why?!
Oh, and we also reject evolution because there is way too much order to everything on the planet! Back on the animals part, look at the food chain, for instance. One animal exists to eat some other living object, or that objects wastes or biproducts and it also exists to be and produce food for another object. That kind of order doesn't happen by chance. Well, no, that's wrong. The rules of probability would state that there is _some_ chance of all of the right factors coming together. But I don't think that the "one in a million" cliche even comes close to scratching the surface of that projection.
But what do we know? Christians believe in a supernatural, unseen being. We believe that there is a true good and a true evil in the world, and we believe that He who is that one true good cared enough for His Creation that He offered a blood sacrifice like no other so that the Creation and the Creator could be together in the perfect place that the Creator intended for us.

But back to the point...

I believe that we function just the way we were meant to function, and I believe that our "structure" is perfect for its cause. That may not be the "optimal" and "strongest" arrangement or design, but that was not the purpose when we were conceived. So, regardless of what science may say, I believe that we are just like we are supposed to be and that injury, however painful and unwanted, is the result of mistreating our bodies. And no, OW, I am not saying that you have mistreated yours. I am not singling you out at all. I myself have a bad back and bad knees. Go figure! What I am saying is that man is doing things that he was not meant to do, and that man is under more stress, (mental and physical), that he was meant to endure.

Sorry. It's late. I'm tired. The mention of evolution hit a sore spot, and I am in a satirical mood.

Like people who have never had a hangover, I believe back problems stem from improper use and/or external shocks to the system. (Not having a hangover of course stemming from improper use of alcohol, meaning you didn't drink enough of it....)
