It was better the second time around.
We didn't notice many changes from the version we saw - a couple new special effects, and some new music.
Full theatre, I was thrilled to see that. Applause at the end, something I haven't often seen at a movie.
Wheeee!

We're seeing it tomorrow at 4:00.
I am so stoked.

I've seen applause during movies, and at the end, and they tend to be at Star Wars or Star Trek movies. Which incidentally have their own fanatical fan base.
Although I question why people applaud at the cinemas, I don't mind it at all. However, I really don't like when the audience applauds during the movie. You're suddenly made aware you're sitting in a cinema with a bunch of people and you lose parts of the scene where the dialogue is happening but you can't hear it because people are applauding.
So I generally tend to avoid movies with a huge fan base during opening week.
In the US, I'd avoid going to the cinemas during the time when HS kids would go. Did that once and man the kids were a right pain in the ass. Well, so are the kids here in Hong Kong. So high school kids in general (specifically in groups), should be banned from movies when adults* go watch them.
*Adults wearing costumes in the theme of the movie they are going to watch should be sitting outside in the car park with the banned high school kids too.

Not having been to a Star Wars movie since I was 8, I wouldn't know.

Heh. You've gotten the wrong fan base I guess. The movie itself? Perfectly quiet. Laughter at certain times, but never enough noise that any dialogue got muffled. I can only ever recall one movie I went to where mid movie applause happened, and I was one of those cheering. (ID4, take a guess on the scene.)

Orson Scott Card's Serenity review. I think he liked Serenity. I'm not sure tho - he's so underspoken...

Just got back from seeing it.
I loved it, but I can't say any more without massive spoilers.

Anybody up for starting a spoiler filled thread? Man that movie was bold. The best part about it was that the movie almost felt like just another episode. I mean the special effects seemed about the same, the acting, everything. They didn't dress it up like some other now shitty wannabe sci-fi series like to do on the big screen (*cough* Star *cough* Trek).
As for the spoilers my upmost respect goes out to everybody who saw the pre-screenings. I mean you guys must've been itching knowing what was going to happen. I get the feeling most people didn't hear a peep about it either... hell the preview trailer for Serenity is one of the few trailers I've ever seen recently that doesn't give away the movie.
All in all a master stroke. Orson's review is pretty much spot on in my book. Though its really impossible to discuss this further without unloading spoilers... so how about the new thread? |

For IRC, please direct spoiler talk to #serenity.
I simply can't find the words to properly praise Joss for this, and I have to echo Jay's amazement that y'all who saw the pre-screenings kept quiet.

Mel Brooks spoof (Senility) coming in 3....2....1......
Does anyone know when the DVD of the movie`s supposed to come out? The only cinema where I live is a pr0n theatre, and while I wouldn`t object to certain Firefly cast members nekkid, I don`t have time to go see movies anyway.

I'll probably download it and then buy the DVD when it comes out.

It won't be playing in a theatre by the time I have a chance to see it!

I saw it on Friday night. I haven't cried in years now, but when the credits rolled I was bawling like a little baby. Granted, I'm not exactly at my most emotionally stable given the events of this summer, but nonetheless that was one hell of a movie.

On another note - Serenity did alright when it came to the financials last weekend:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/movies/box_office.php
It got beat by Flightplan (a movie that makes me want to cry) and barely beat out the Corpse bride. Not too shabby. God forbid it could maybe hopefully hit the 100 million mark.... as I can only imagine that would surely result in the ressurection of the series. |

I don't think Serenity is going to even play in Hong Kong. It's got pretty damn good ratings at rottentomatoes.com which is always a good thing. However, that don't mean the movie is going to come out in HK.
THAT WILL BE TEH SUCK! No matter, I hope that I can get a 42inch Plasma HDTV and then watch the DVD on it. I've seen a few DVD's on my friend's 42" Plasma, and let me tell you, it's fucking great! You don't need to go to the cinema to get full effect anymore.
Off course, it would be hella sweet if Serenity would be one of the first release of HD-DVD's out. Then that would be even better.

I will condone the illegal downloading of the movie in your case OW, but only if you PINKIE SWEAR that you will buy the DVD when it gets released by that dude on the street corner with the folding table....

HD-DVD or Blu-Ray? I mean with this continuing standards war who is to say what you'll be watching it on. Then again it looks like HD-DVD is starting to pull ahead so maybe the point is moot. Not that it will stop Sony... they'll run into right into the ground and out the other side before they decide that its a waste of time (assuming it comes to that).
