I see these Joy of Tech comics posted in forums from time to time, and I always promise myself to start reading it regularly, but usually forget.

JD, I've been meaning to ask: how many and which Macs do you use?

Well, once upon a time, before I had any comprehension of computers (like age 6), we had an Apple II something. Then came the Performa 575. Six years later I get a G4 350 Sawtooth. My sister got an iMac DV+ a year after that. My parents got a used G3 233 Desktop a year after that. Around that time I piced up a Classic running 7.1. This past Christmas my friend gave me a Classic with 6.0.8 on an external HD, and I bought my sister a used PowerBook Duo 230. I bought a PowerMac 6500 for $100 this past spring for use as a MP3 server in the living room.

I was once a raving Maclot, and I'm the only person I work with who has any clue about Macs. Therefore I'm very good at picking out Macs when I see them and knowing what they are and how fast they are. Did I mention I was a raving Maclot?

Indeed. My only Mac is a desktop G3, so I spotted the same resemblence you did. Had it been any other non-handled Power Mac, I probably wouldn't have.

Edit: Do you know anything about processor upgrades? Upgraded any of your own Macs? Reason I ask is that I'm considering the Power Logix G4 533/550 and wondered if you knew anything in its favor/to its detriment.

I bought any-old G4 400, just to see what a G4 would do for me without spending too much. It worked out okay, but I'd like to research my next upgrade better.

LM:
First check what power regulator you have. If it's a royal, you might fry your mobo.

See owc pages for clear how to find and check the regulator.

Now, we be fucked with beiges, since the max processor upgrade is to 533 currently, I think that's a 9x multiplier. In theory, 10 is possible.

Someone out there may figure out a way to unlock that multiplier, but, I've heard it is not an easy problem, and not one likely to happen in the near future.

Frankly, the combination of needing a new regulator, and the jump in performance to maybe twice your existing processor, just doesn't seem cost effective.

Why not buy a used 9600, and install a 800 mhz processor, and have a bunch of pci slots?

Problem with beiges are the pci bus is limited to 75 mb/sec, and the ide bus is limited to 16 mb/sec, both on cheap chipsets being used, to keep profits up.

I guess what I'm getting at is this is one of those cases where you maybe better off selling the thing, and picking up another box, rather then upgrading the machine.

It's also limited to 3 pci slots. It also doesn't seem to like using more then one kind of scsi card in the machine.

On the other hand, if one of these days, for about 300 bucks, I could upgrade, and double the processor speed, plus adding a G4, it might be worth doing, since I do have a bunch of stuff that I can connect to it, and I do like the onboard ethernet and slow scsi.

I don't see running much over 922 on the machine, since too many problems occur with trying to run OS X, like it won't see my scsi cards, either the LVD, or the uw card.

By the way, I think the beige tower was one of the all time great rat fucks by apple, of all time. They sold this thing at premium prices, 3 grand,
with a half ass ide chipset, and a pos grackle pci chipset.

You paid for what should have been a workstation quality machine, and got a desktop.

Course, dell did sort of the same thing, using a similar chipset that limits the ide bus to only one device per channel.

Same thing Apple did on the A ide bus, IIRC.

One has to be very careful buying apple computers, or, you get royally fucked...

Socrates:

I know about the Royal VRM issue. It's the first thing I checked when I got my Mac. I've been running a G4 400 for a month or so. I got the 400 to see what a G4 would do for me. It works well enough I think it worth it to max out the processor.

Socrates wrote:

8 is the highest multiplier I know how to set on the board itself, but the 7410 can override the motherboard multiplier. The PowerLogix module has a card-adjustable multiplier up to 9, which will give you 600 MHz on the 66.7 MHz bus. Most people seem to be able to run these cards at that speed without modification, though PowerLogix is carefull not to guarantee it.

If your peripherals will run on a PCI bus overclocked to 37.5 MHz, then you have up to 675 MHz available, which some folk find atainable with Peltier cooling, but which I probably won't attempt myself. Most PC peripherals will work at 37.5, but some won't. I have no idea about Mac cards. This could end up being important to me, as I will be upgrading to a PCI ATA100 or ATA133 controller soon.

Quote:

I thought of this, but then I get an even slower processor bus which would render the higher CPU clock speed (800 MHz) less useful. It would probably make more sense to upgrade to a B&W board (100 MHz) or to go to something more modern with AGP, etc.

I'm a tinkerer though, so I may upgrade the beige, then swap the motherboard for a B&W board (in which all of my beige upgrades will work), then, finally, get around to replacing it with more modern gear. There are worse hobbies.

Quote:

Aye, there's the rub.

Quote:

Which make? OS X supported or no?

Quote:

10 Base T? Meh. But I'm stuck with it as long as I keep the Beige board due to the shortage of PCI slots.

BTW, the early beige boards, like mine, won't take a slave drive under OS <= 9, but will under OS X. Pity the IDE interface runs at the speed of pitch.

LM:
Sounds like you know what you are doing.

I'm just sick of pissing money away for mac upgrades, when, for the same money, I could build one hell of a pc.

Look at how much money you put in, and what you get out???

I still look at this stuff, and compare the PC side, and the quality stuff I could get for the same money, without any sorry ass chipsets, or other problem components to deal with.

The beiges were real take you to the cleaner computers. Advertized as server quality machines, with MacPlus Quality components, refering to the
ide chipsets, and the grackle chipset.

10BT works fine for me, since so are my hubs, and, my ADSL doesn't come in over 1.5 MB/sec.

I think one thing the processor upgrade would really help is I always have had the feeling the processor was not capable of handling the number of peripherals I tied into it.

If for no other reason, this might make the upgrade worth it.

Again, I'll wait, and see if someone figures out a way around the bus limitations, and can gete a multiplier around 16x, like they do for the pci macs.

If not, I find it reasonably well balanced, with a 40 MB sec cheetah xl18 boot drive, Voodoo 5500 video card, 9.22, 384 mb of ram, and 922.

I also have a Nikon 1200 scanner, SBS pci extension box, and a bunch of other periphs, if you are intrested, and in the bay area, make me an offer...

My upgrading experice is limited to trying to put in a processor upgrade for my Performa 575 that I found when Incredible Universe was going out of business. I couldn't get it into the case, and there was a broken pin to begin with. I'll sit out this discussion.
