Older games that were written for older versions of DirectX sometimes do weird things. Even my Age of Empires 1 will occasionally start fucking up the display on the road to a bluescreen. Weird, but what are you going to do?

Yes, but someone released a mod for XW-A that added higher-res texures and (I think) higher-poly models, making it more suitable for today's kickass machines..
