I busted out the metronome and was practicing some guitar licks and scales. I eventually got to 300bpm and was playing 16th notes (that's 4 notes per beat, or 20 notes a second) comfortably.

I was comfortably playing 20 notes a second.

Let me repeat myself. I was comfortable, relaxed and playing like it was no effort. I could always play fast, but playing really fast always felt like I was making some effort to hit those speeds and never felt comfortable.

And before anyone says, 'whoa 20 notes a second is fast!!!', it's not even close to how fast real guitar shredders can play. Jazz guitar players in the 70's were playing 16th notes at 300bpm. Playing 16th notes at 340 is getting fast. So I shall see if I can reach that speed. Then maybe i'll be a true guitar shredder... i've been practicing my guitar almost 4 hours a day recently. It was about a month ago that I felt physically and mentally I reached a new level of playing on my guitar. My guitar just felt more - to overuse the word - comfortable to me. Like it wasn't a stranger, and licks, riffs, and scales didn't have this strange technical level to it, but something that I could feel and see. It took about 4-5 years that reach this new level. I wonder how long it will take to reach the next level of guitar playing.

I'm massively jealous. I've only had a guitar since January and somehow I keep getting distracted...

playing live while he was with Mr. Big. The stuff thats played around the 3:42 and 5:30(or earlier I think) is what I'm practicing. Just extended licks that goes up and down scales.

Just so you guys can have an idea at what is going on at those speeds, check out where he plays the riffs slow and then fast.

Oh and the most bizarre and smammy guitar player, has some guitar lessons too but he does some really weird stuff. Yes, he wears a jason mask and a KFC bucket on his head, but the man can play the fucking guitar. His stuff with GNR was really good and melodic, even though his video lesson here doesn't show that side. I'd check out the Buckethead video for sure, just so you know what true smam is. Ha ha.

Appears to be a Micheal Myres mask.. Jason just wore a hockey mask.

Incidentally, that's a seriously weird video, though he does tell that guitar what-for.

Yeah, the guy is weird. His website is more eccentric and out there. There is really no picture of what the guy looks like except for this old black and white newspaper clipping when he was young. GnR fans with backstage passes have seen him after a live show, and apparently there is a photo from one of those times, but I can't find it.

BucketHead + GnR = teh win*
Buckethead Solo work = not my taste

*NiN's, Robert Finck, also played lead for GnR, but man does that guy fucking suck on the guitar. His bends are sooooooooo off pitch and his playing is sooooo fucking sloppy. I felt bad that Buckethead had to play opposite that guy. Oh you should read an interview with Ozzy Osborne and his meeting with Buckethead. Quite teh funneh!
