I think God's big enough to handle a little mocking now and then, don't you? Don't you think God has a sense of humor? I would imagine he, if he exists, would have an excellent sense of humor.
|
Is He big enough to handle it? Absolutely. Should it be done? Absolutely not. At least, that's what I feel as a Christian. I don't understand how anyone could look at this world and not see that God exists...
And does he have a sense of humor? Absolutely! Look at things like the duck-billed platypus and Magus!

I'm pretty sure, Dv, that this was not an attack on Canada or her people as a whole. I think that the Jon Stewart quote was just used to prove a point: don't praise Jon Stewart for bashing America because he bashes Canada, too. In fact, I would say that all of those comments were directly for JR and his comments.
|
But they weren't my comments. They were Jon Stewart's comments.
I repeat: do you think Jon Stewart hates America?
Quote: |
Kingpin expressed what a few of us were feeling: 1) we took offense at the mocking of our God,
|
Do you think Jon Stewart was mocking your God? How about all the members of his audience? Were they mocking him as well?
Quote: |
2) JR's post showed absolutely no concern for those affected by the hurricane. Kingpin, Magus, and my family live in an area that has had Katrina's eye about an hour east and now Rita's eye about an hour or two west of them. There's a lot of emotion there! So no, he wasn't saying or in any way insinuating that none of our Canadian smammers cared anything for us. He was just saying that JR's comment was inappropriate, especially considering JR showed no concern for anyone's well-being.
|
Of course I'm concerned about people's well-being. But Magus had already said he had evacuated! It didn't sound like it was a big deal, and in fact he was back in a couple of days with no repercussions whatsoever.
Quote: |
Yes, Magus said that it wasn't all that bad, but he can't speak for all of us simply because he doesn't know.
|
Was it bad for anyone else? Was anyone on OSY hurt or lost property, or anything?
Quote: |

That's fine if you feel that way and fine if you want to express your opinion on the matter, but I still maintain that God can handle a little gentle ribbing. Which is what that was, gentle ribbing.
The other thing I find interesting is that these "don't mock our God" comments are coming from the same people who will often speak up against "political correctness" as being a bad thing. Well, isn't being afraid to mock God the ultimate in political correctness? It seems a contradiction in my eyes.
Quote: |
I don't understand how anyone could look at this world and not see that God exists...
|
And I don't understand how anyone could have any kind of confidence in the existence or non-existence of God, given the complete lack of evidence either way. That's why they call it belief, because it isn't meant to be obvious and/or provable, it's something you feel, not something you conclude logically based on observation. That's the whole point of religion, to believe in things you can't see! If it's so darn obvious, what's the point of belief?
I respect people for having beliefs, but I'm not about to say that one belief is right and the others are all wrong, it's just too impossible to prove. And I wouldn't expect people who are believers to prove their beliefs anyway. You believe, and that's good enough. But don't tell me I have to believe, because I'll decide that for myself, thank you very much.

Considering that particular Jon quote in your first response to JR - that's bloody well uncalled for.
Magus said things weren't all that bad - and because we trust his judgement, we took him at his word, knowing he'd tell us otherwise. There are enough of his crew in the area, we know we'd hear if it were otherwise.
Just because our concern and questions are not here, in this specific place where you can read it with your own eyes, doesn't mean those of us who aren't below the magic line of worthyness aren't worried.
Instead, assume away, it's all the rage.
Talk about showing your own true colours.

I took the quote from Jon Stewart for what it is - more verbal spewage. It entertains me with what his writers come up with.
It's Kingpins' response after that that I am responding to - and considering JR hasn't had that great of a past few days himself, I have NO problem stepping in and bitch slapping someone for being an ass. Actually, I'd have stepped in on this occasion regardless of JR's bad days. He's my friend, just like most of the #osy denizens. (Not Faye, she's a whore.)

Then perhaps he should have SAID that, instead of quoting something that can be taken just as offensively, and then not added to the cinders by being directly insulting?
Instead, he quoted, then snarked, and took the hypocritical path of non-enlightenment.
ANYHOW.
Since you are posting, I take it you weathered Rita's temper tantrum decently enough?

Hehe, cool pic.
Anyone have any other cgi-irc sites handy? The one I've been using (ictoadd.com) hasn't been working the past few days because of some script error.

Well, I've been talking about moving to TX for a while now, and it's finally happening. On Wednesday, the truck gets loaded, and Thursday will be spent driving. This obviously means no intarweb for me for a few days.
I'll be shutting down tomorrow afternoon, likely around 3PM CST to turn in the cable modem. Comcast has already been called, and I've scheduled an installation at the new lair for Monday the 13th. As soon as reasonably possible, I'll be back online.
In my absence, Kingpin has graciously offered to temporarily host IRC at kingpinmc.dyndns.org:6667. Many thanks to him for keeping #OSY up.

I'm pleased to announce that, while there's a lot of unpacking and setting up left to do, all is once more as it should be in IRC land. Yes, I have indeed returned, with Opbot and Faye in tow. Please come over at your earliest convenience.
Many thanks go to Kingpin for generously providing #OSY a home in my absence.
