After much waiting, the new graphics card for my Cube has finally arrived from Germany. Thanks to Japanese Customs, it took almost a month to get here. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I think I`ve upgraded my Cube in pretty much every possible way:

1.8GHz PowerLogix 7447 G4
Radeon 9700 Pro (128MB)
120GB 7200rpm HDD
1GB PC133 RAM

OK, compared to new Macs (let alone new PCs), its no great shakes, but it should keep me going for another year or two. Then again, even if I had the $$$ for a new computer, none of Apple`s current desktop line-up is attractive to me.

PowerMac G5: Too big, not enough expansion for the size.
iMac G5: Don`t like the inflexibility of AIO (i.e. if I`m paying for a 20" TFT display, I`ll want to use it long after the G5 is obsolete).
Mac Mini: Too small, anaemic specs.

What I`d really like is a Shuttle-style Mac. In the meantime, I`ll be quite happy with my hot-rodded Cube (using it for Final Cut, PS & games).

I installed the Radeon this morning; not difficult at all, but as it draws a lot of power, I had to install a splitter cable so that the optical drive power connector can feed the card. The consequent cat`s cradle of cables is a bit of a mess, compounded by the masking tape I used to hold it together.......

I use a PowerLogix PowerCube enclosure, so all the unsightly cabling & tape is in plain view. Not pretty; pics coming soon........

AYB really liked the Cube.

AYB thinks your Cube is rather smammy

Smile

Seriously, that is the one vintage Mac AYB would like, the Cueb, and that should get you bye for awhile. AYB will keep chugging away on his Barton 2500+ until he has a smammy game that it will not run

Smile

Your cube is cool. It's cooler than my iBook. (But I have a bigger harddrive, since I managed to get a good deal on a 160 gb external drive) Very Happy

Well OSY has my weakest password, since the effects of beinig hacked on OSY are the least serious too me.

My iBook is a fortress in comparison. (Encrypted swap, encrypted home dir, strong passwords, no auto login after sleep)

So what's actually orginal in the Cube? The motherboard?

Yeah, that`s pretty much it, apart from the optical drive (still using the original DVD-ROM drive, but thinking about a dual-layer DVD-RW in future......).

I am using the original case, but only as a tissue paper holder at the moment. Smile CPU/GPU upgrades = more heat = Cube meltdown, if you use the original case.

The PL case that I`m using (linked in the OP) is clear, see-through plastic. I`m thinking of painting the inside surface - any ideas about what sort of paint works best on acrylic?

A maxed-out Cube is indeed the height of Smamminess.

A shame you couldn't use the original case, though. "It's FLOATING in the AIR!!"
