HD-DVD or Blu-Ray? I mean with this continuing standards war who is to say what you'll be watching it on. Then again it looks like HD-DVD is starting to pull ahead so maybe the point is moot. Not that it will stop Sony... they'll run into right into the ground and out the other side before they decide that its a waste of time (assuming it comes to that).

Honestly, I have no idea. This format war is stupid. It's like the same with the CD-/+RW shit that was in the end so pointless as no one really won it.
Sony as usual will fuck up and kill their own technology anyway.

I'm thinking Toshiba's HD-DVD will probably win out. Either way, i'll be getting Serenity HD if it comes out in a heart beat. Hell, i'll actually buy the Firefly HD series if it comes out. I tell ya, on a 42" Plasma TV, you can see all the artifacts if they exist. HD content on the other hand is really smooth to the point of how ridiculously good it is.

Amen! My bro-in-law bought a new 42" plasma, and I had a chance to watch some HDTV on it... I'm not a sports fan, but he had a football game on and wow! That was friggin amazing! You could see the frigging blades of grass as if you sitting on the field! I can't imagine a HD-DVD with a good surround sound system... just wow...
And now, my dad is about to go out and buy a 42" LCD! I'm getting really frigging jealous!

Well, the CAM version just hit the download scene. I'm not going to bother with a low-quality CAM, I'll wait for a high-quality DVD rip.

Of course, if the DVD rip comes out the same time the DVD does I'm just going to buy the damned DVD - I know I definately want to own it.

Damnit! Am I the only one that doesn't have a 42" LCD TV? Where do I sign up? Is there a waiting period? Do you have to pee in a cup or what? LCD TV = <3!

MasterOfTheHat, I would avoid getting an LCD TV if I were your dad. LCD pales in comparision to Plasma. Problem is that LCD tv manf. are pimping the resolutions of their panels which is higher then Plasma's but only confuse the consumers (IMO).

Why I think Plasma's are better:
1) True black
2) Beeeellllioons of colors (in HDTV this is important)
3) Much cheaper then LCD TV at the same size

Why LCD's maybe considered better:
1) Lighter then plasma's
2) longer lifespan

Anywhoooo... LCD tech is getting better, so who knows how good the new models are and how much they have closed the gap on their Plasma brothers.

That whole "longer lifespan" thing is the killer for me. Several different places have said that 6-7 years is what you'll get out of plasma before it starts irreparably dimming. And for the money you're dropping for such hardware, I expect that I'll be using it for a much longer time span. Our current 32" CRT is 8+ years right now, and we (well, I Wink) I was planning to keep it until the broadcast transition to digital is complete, at least.

DLP is starting to look like a good balance of price and size, though...

Since I'm such a freak about packrattery, I require superhuman longevity in almost all of my major purchases. I have computers from the 80s, video games from the 70s, and I plan to have some of these things until death parts us. (Mine or theirs, I'm not terribly picky, though if they go first I'm not promising there won't be any Frankenstienean experimentation. Fair Warning.) It's part of the reason I don't really own anything with OLEDs. It's what, 400-600 hours and the blues destroy themselves? Leaving your fancy doodad a hazy collection of reg, green, yellow, and maybe brown. Sign my ass up! Oooh, nope.

After I moved to my current apartment, my television died before I could order cable. So I hatched a experiment and only ordered cable internet. Hasn't been to bad so far, I go to movies and watch DVDs on the computer. Actually haul the sofa across the room so I can get that "home theater" experience of watching a flick on a 19" CRT. Very geek-ghetto. But not having TV freaks people out, especially the cute woman people that are addicted to the tube.

Did catch "Serenity" on the big screen on the recommendations of three red headed belly dancers that I met at local science fiction convention. Good flick, much better than any the Star Wars or Star Trek drak that I've been dragged to. But I won't be trading my library card on a big screen anytime soon, since most single women in my area have TIVO, so we can make out while Chris Rock and company stare at us.

Phah. I could live just fine without TV service. About the only show I watch is lost, which is posted (typically a HD version a day after it airs anyway). The rest of DVDs of various types. Or just wasting away in front of the keyboard.

I only need a TV for playing videogames. And the occasional DVD.

Now, I wouldn't mind watching a bit more TV, PBS has a really cool lineup on Saturdays (This Old House, The Woodwright's Shop, etc.) but I'm just so damned lazy (and forgetful, and apathetic, and let's not forget too poor to own a tivo-like-device.) So I don't really watch anything at all.

I'm starting to question my cable TV subscription. I love CBC Newsworld and Discovery, but I don't really watch enough to justify the expense. Heck, I could buy another video game each month!

I'd keep the TV and home theatre speaker setup for movies and gaming, of course. Smile

Heh, in my house, the TV is almost always on. We usually end up watching Discovery, HGTV, Food Network, or TLC, but we do watch a lot of it. And, of course, we watch a lot of movies. So yeah, I want a bigger screen TV and I want to mount my surround sound speakers. Oh yeah, and I want to build that HTPC, too... So it would be hard for me to live without a TV for very long. But I will say that my lifespan without a PC would be considerably shorter!
