I remember that. Crazyness.
Didn't someone also do a speed test with a liquid nitrogen column? I bet that was amusing.
Edit:
I'm thiking of a P4 at 5.25 GHz. Less awesome than a 286 at 1GHz would be.

That, or it's a hoax.

It's a hoax. heat isn't the only thing stopping clock rates, by a longshot.

My brother's 486 would overclock very nicely when placed in the freezer. I don't remember how fast it got, but probably not as high as these people claim. I do remember being somewhat impressed. I think I posted about it once on Ars back when I remembered the details better.

A very long time ago, and I can't remember whether it was on Ars Technica (he *did* post there occasionally at one point) or on RealWorldTech, the esteemed Paul DeMone once speculated on the theoretical performance of a (IIRC) hypothetical 1GHz 486, or maybe it was a 1GHz version of the original Pentium.
Due to the memory that the processor used in its original configuration, the chipset the processor was hooked to, and the cache the processor was equpped with, he concluded that a 1GHz version would be *FAR* slower than a 1GHz Pentium III or Athlon -- like at least five times slower, maybe ten times -- across the board in any application. The memory, cache, and bandwidth just wouldn't scale.
Suffice it to say that his explanation was completely over my head but I did know enough to get the general idea. If I had any idea how to find that post I'd try, but I doubt it's possible.

While it might be theoretically possible with the processor, I very much doubt the motherboards of the time could provide the right multipliers and timings to clock to those speeds, or even 250Mhz for that matter.
But its possible. I've seen some extremely weird and obscure motherboards I my day so you never know.
