Speaking of adding memory to a Mac, is there a good way to test it? Prime95 for the Mac? Bootable memtest?

I'd just boot it from the hardware test CD and run the long memory test once or twice. Don't waste your time looking for APK_RAM_TEST_2000*****OS_X or anything.

I know you're being funny, but I'm a little insulted you'd imply something like that. I have a lot of respect for Prime95 and memtest, and I use them extensively when I build machines. I do not tolerate instability.

Eh. I've had one bad memory experience in the last eight years. IME it's rarely an issue unless you're using cheapo RAM or you scrubbed your feet across the carpet before you touched it. The hardware CD's more than sufficient in 99% of cases. (It's also the only one that Apple will recognize as a valid diagnostic if you ever need to haul the machine in for service.)

YMMV and all that.

I got a bad 1GB stick of fancy schmancy OCZ last year. I was getting instability when using in a dual channel configuration with its twin, but very rare. Prime95 would fail on the second calculation, and memtest should me the exact location it was bad. Used the results to RMA it.

ummm... don't get RAM from Apple. Lord knows why the hell they charge so much for RAM, but don't get it from them. Really. Don't. Buy good quality RAM yourself, make sure you're not a furry animal, make sure you've ground your self, and then insert RAM. In the laptop that is.

Half of obscene is probably still obscene.

I tried to take my laptop apart last night, to clean the vents and whatnot. Damn it's hard. I cut myself in the process. I failed to get down the the CPU die, despite undoing every screw in sight. I couldn't get the enourmous heatsink/heatpipe/fan/wind tunnel arrangement off. It was pretty impressive. I guess if you're going to put a 3.2 Ghz P4 in a laptop you need some impressive cooling Smile

Well I am too scared to lose the little thing. And I don't like fucking around with the warranty, the guy at the store was really pressuring "Yeah your memory probably broke it" until it was proven not so. Claiming it voided my Applecare. (I nearly broke into a sweat, since the guy was claiming numbers in the hunderds of euro's, while I paid for the applecare, tiger and of course the iBook)

It already had it 256 MB in it. Since I value my iBook working more than the monies it takes for them to do it, they can do it.

The 200 euro's without the mandatory 20% VAT for 1 GB was a obscene number. The 84 euro's with VAT was more palletable. But still overpriced.

Well I have been exposed to way too much webmail. (Since I usually carry around my iBook everywhere, it also holds all my e-mail)

How the fuck can they e-mail as painfull as possible. Slow as molasses, and who the fuck decided that parsing the entire fucking ldap directory of the university in Javascript was a GOOD idea.

Doesn't take away the need to use the university webmail interface, since there is where I take all my non trivial e-mail.

I ran into this when a certain someone was in rehab and needed to get to their email, but it doesn't allow you to have a blank password. <-not a bad thing

Oh fuck, I forgot to send mine in last week.

Ah well. The beloved Pismo is holding its own. No rush.
