Kingpin's nursery rhyme is about the Black Death. Or the 1665 plague. I forget which. The version I knew when I was little went:

Ring a ring of roses
Pockets full of posies
Atichoo, atichoo
We all fall down

(Roses and posies - docters that that bad smells carried disease or something, third line is sound of sneezing, fourth line is self explanatory Smile)

Ring around the rosies (blushed cheeks)
Pocket full of posies (to keep down the smell)
Upstairs, Downstairs (they quarantined people by piling them in houses)
We all fall down ( Yeah, I think that means they die)

Great what we teach our children isn't it.

How about the cradle falling down out of the tree? Laughing

The version I knew was

Ring around the rosies
Pocket full of posies
Ashes, Ashes
We all fall down.

Thought the ashes had something to do with cremation.

There's good stuff about the plague/fire in Neal Stephenson's Baroque cycle, I forget which book.

Black Death was *not* caused by Buebonic as history has up to this point taught us. It's true. There's just no way that AYB can see it.

Wikipedia tells us this:

Historical records attribute the Black Death to an outbreak of bubonic plague, an epidemic of the bacterium Yersinia pestis spread by fleas with the help of animals like the black rat (Rattus rattus), although today's experts debate both the microbiological culprit and mode of transmission.

Wikipedia also includes the dissenting opinions. Also, Historical records are of no use in identifying a pathogen when these *records* predate Louis Pasture by hundreds of years.

It is semi-modern thought that lead the cause of Black Death to be Beubonic Plague based on an outdated sense of being modern, and it appears that very modern forensic pathology methods are contradicting the Beubonic link and pointed to a hemorragic fever.

There's no way a flea/rat transmitted disease can be contained as well by quarantine as the Black Death was in several places.

Death records showed infection followed a path through social circles/families. Beubonic would have been much more erratic.

The disease spread through Rural areas where there was no rat problem at speeds up to 5km/day.

Symptoms based on eye-witness accounts are not congruent with Beubonic.

DNA evidence probably will tell the nature of the germ, but they've found nothing legitimate in teeth and bone fragments. They will need soft tissue, like from a peat-bog to get a DNA sample.
