Hi folks. Due to the incessant hammering of this site by random spambots from various Russian porn sites, with dozens of randomly-generated usernames per day (all of which don't exist and so bounce back to my mail server) I've been forced to install an anti-spambot on the user registration process.

It's a simple script that supposedly requires a few seconds between registering and attempts to figure out if it's a script that's scraping the web page or a human accessing it normally over a web browser. If it thinks it's found a bot, it switches the "submit" form to a "preview" instead. A human would presumably know what to do, but a bot wouldn't. That's the theory anyway.

What I really wanted was one of those "type in the hard to read random key code images that a computer can't read" things, but I couldn't find one. Hopefully this works. Let me know if it makes anything else weird on your end.

Woman From Russia was funny, but dozens of attempted fake registrations per day is just annoying. Damn the Internets!

If you are talking about captcha authentication ala Yahoo, that doesn't seem too hard, but sometimes even the best set of human eyes can't figure the string of characters out due to the distortion. But there's some free modules out there for various languages.

Yeah, I was looking for a capcha mod for PHPBB but couldn't find one. Those things annoy me sometimes because it seems like they make it TOO hard to figure out what the character is. I suppose it's a never-ending battle against bots using OCR software. It just annoys me that this is a problem in the first place!!

I think a modest solution would be firebombing the homes of people sending out spam. Just think how quickly the spam would stop after the first few hundred fiery deaths! I think it's reasonable.

Ummm... phpBB from 2.0.11 on should have CAPTCHA verification.

D'oh!

No wonder I couldn't find a mod for it!

I'm having trouble enabling it in the configuration panel though. It keeps going back to non-enabled.

Hmm.

Better read up on it. It probably requires something either A. Not available on Windows, or 2. Something you just need to download and then it's good to go. I'd lay even odds on a graphics library being needed.
