I just wonder if it hits MSDN faster than MacOS X for x86 on The Piratebay.

Oh yeah because that will be enforced Very Happy It won't work on plain jane x86 hardware out of the box - but I bet given some time it can be made to work.

I have no doubt too.

I'm betting it'll work on standard stuff right out of the box... I don't care what "The Steve" says... or at least with a very minimal amount of effort

Seeing as how Mac hackers got OS X to work on non-supported mac hardware, even ones like the 603 and 604 PPC based Powermacs, I don't see how an OS X designed for Intel x86 won't have even more hackers working on getting OS X to work on vanilla PC boxes.

So yeah. As I said, I have no doubt we'll see OS X 10.4.1 and later version work without much hassle.

One thing worth mentioning that I caught on the Ars fora: It seems that the latest binary version of Darwin is compiled with SSE2 optimizations on the x86 side of things. Given Apple's high minimum requirements on the x86 side - it wouldn't surprise me if OSX itself was compiled with SSE2 optimizations. This of course by default requires that you run in on a processor with SSE2 capabilities (i.e. a Pentium4 or greater). So this automatically keeps older Pentium 3s and Athlons (not entirely sure with Athlon's have SSE2) from being able to run OSX x86.

Rumor also has it that OSX x86 won't require SSE3 due to the fact that Intel's mobile processors still don't support it. So things are still looking good for my Dual Xeon Smile

Yes, "Whither be the Longhorn for which mine lonely heart yearns" would have been a much more grammatically correct, and humorous, thread title. Very Happy

I got on a read the comparision thread kick, and apparently the OS X kernal is pretty suck ass at server functions, due to it's current design.

Who cares about long horn, when XP 64 bit is avaliable, and Athlon 64's are cheap?

I think so, too. I think the Romeo and Juliet quote subtitle fits, too.

I think it goes something like this for Athlon's:

Athlon XP - SSE
Athlon 64 - SSE2
Athlon 64 (Venice core) - SSE3

Try to install 32-bit programs.

Is it supposed to work? I have no idea.
