Various sites have various tools to give you idea of how fast you're connecting. There's a simple java aplet in the tools section on dslreports.com that should give you a decent overview.

That's the problem. My Java Virtual Machine isn't working and the MS download page doesn't have the JVM anymore!

I can't play the applets!

WTF?

Hmm. Try Sun, perhaps?

Don't use Java very often so have no good suggestions here, sorry.

go to java.sun.com, and try to figure out how the heck to download theirs (not as easy as it would sound, given the team of sadistic monkeys which apparently designed the website).

as for the speed thing, just google for "broadband speed test" or something similar.

Use the C-Net Bandwidth Meter!!! (tm)

I tried it and just got 1604 kbps. I've gotten up to 4000 at times, but mostly it hovers at the sub-2000 range.

Using JR's, I got 1789 Kbps. Rather nice.

This isn't funny Reimer. I don't dip below .5 mbps in speed but my pings are 999.

My connection, once I enter Arena just stutters and I lose connection CONSTANTLY.

Can someone tell me what's going on?

:/

Try different servers.

Also, remember that there are two issues: connection speed (measured here in kbps, kilo bits per second... divide by 8 to get kBytes per sec) and latency.

Latency is what ping measures. It shows the delay in sending a signal between two computers, measured in milliseconds. 500msec is considered the maximum latency for online games, as this is half a second delay between you pressing the "zap" button and the guy on the other end getting the signal that a zap is coming. Most twitch games like Quake 3 won't be any fun unless latency is 100msec or lower.

If you're getting 999, it means that you have > 1 second of latency between two sites (you and the Quake server, in this case)

It is quite possible to have a high connection speed yet horrible latency. You can have a high speed for data transfers but if somewhere down the line, someone's asleep at the switch, as it were, it will take a long time for changes in the data to be propagated.

The other thing to worry about (and ping can help here) is the number of "hops" or different computers your data has to go through between your computer and the server. This affects latency greatly.

How do I identify my latency?

ping the server. Any server. it shows the time taken in msec. Just type ping xx.xx.xx.xx from a cmd prompt.

Ok, but THAT"s the problem.

If I ping the server and I get a response in ms, I've already got that through gamespy. I have a column of ms measured and few are above 110!

I join it and it has 110. Then I tank to 999?

?

Well, the Net is like that. Connection speed and latency can change at random. See if you can do a traceroute (I forget how to do this, but there are command line and web-based tools to do this) and see how many hops are between you and the server.

Is there some reason that you have to use Gamespy?

Don't know. I'm not much of an online gamer, myself.

But I will play you at Starcraft! Even though it's been ages since I've played and I was never that good at online anyway. Starcraft isn't as anal about latency, either.

Also, Q3 does most of the work on the client side, so your upload limit can affect your connection too.

I just got the ASE.

A. Is there a way I can change that creepy logo to one of my own design?

B. This is ASE's test on my setup:

Upstream: 216k
Downstream: 936k
Packet Header: 90
Packets per Second: 193
Bandwidth Utilization When Pinging: 65%

This all looks good, doesn't it?

frown

Well, I called AOL about my Quake problems.

The first indian DSL help guy was clueless and referred me to the Windows team. The windows team had this honky grandmother who didn't know her ass from a hole in the wall. She referred told me to call DSL.

I called DSL again and got an indian woman(I guess their help lines are in Bangladesh... Rolling Eyes) who said she would refer me to the "game line" after keeping me on hold for almost fifteen min.

She referred me to a non-existent number but not before giving me a GREAT tip.

Use AOL keyword: Gameshelp, to take me to their game support page.

A game support page....

...

FOR EA GAMES.

Gee. EA <> ID.

Oh, yeah, I'M FUCKED.

So yeah, instead of having some balls and saying: "noone will know that here sir", these assclowns kept me busy for half an hour.

Idiots.
