I notice that santilli's avatar is 149 pixels wide.

In the light of that, could I have a 149x149 Ensign Ro?

Well, I will arbitrarily use my position as Moderator to make an arbitrary decision, to arbitrarily decide that a larger Ensign Ro is in fact a "new" Avatar (as it will be a new file) and therefore should go in the "New" Avatars thread.

If you could do the resizing/cropping yourself, that would be great, thanks.

If you look closely at the wave, at the bottom you will see a tiny figure doing a bottom turn. That's me.

This is an open ocean reef in Hawaii, that broke on 20 foot swells. My partner had a small, waterproof kodak. He took the shot, and 4 others, that show me getting a very clean, standing backside tube, for the wave of at least the session at this break.

Place came very close to holding me down, and killing me, twice. The third time I had to swim in, and, nearly didn't make it.

JR:
I spent 9 years, 2-11, at the beach in LA, Manhatten Beach.
We moved. After high school, I went to Santa Cruz, and spent the next 12 years surfing, going to school, and polishing surfboards, working in restaurants, etc.

In 85 I moved to Oahu, and spent the next 10 years chasing the biggest waves I could find.

That year was really weird. I went over to Hawaii thinking
I was going to take it easy, and surf small waves. I got a place at Sunset Beach, and waited. The year opened with 20
Sunset Beach days in a row. That's island 6-12 feet(real world measurements are waves in the 18 foot to 36 foot category), for 20 days. What they don't tell you is when Sunset breaks, almost all the other spots are closed out, so all the surfers on the island are either at Pipe, Sunset, sometimes Jockos, or Lanniakea, and Haliewa. That's not many breaks, and a ton of surfers.

The first day I paddled out at Sunset, the entire place closed out, at about 20 feet, all the way accross the channel.
Early in the year, the channel at Sunset has a sandbar built up over the summer. As the swells come in the Sunset rip, that goes at between 4-6 miles an hour, cleans out the sand.
On this first swell, the rip was running over the sandbar, taking you out to sea, and, when the swells hit the sandbar, all the water running out from the rip was concentrated in this giant, double thick, super hollow, 20 foot barrel, sucking the sand off the bottom. I some how bailed under the wave, almost got sucked back over the falls, but made it out the back.
I figured if I could survive that, I was going to get a 9'4" board, or bigger, and ride Sunset everyday, which is pretty much what I did, for 10 years.

It got a bit crowded later on, and, me and my friends started looking for open ocean breaks, with no crowds.

They started using jetskis, and created the current tow-in surfing craze.

I came back to go to law school in 95, with the hope that it would give me an additional skill, so I could persue
my dreams without having to work 80 hours a week, in two different hotels, to pay the rent, which is what Hawaii was like, when I took off.

thanks for reminding me, this is helping me focus, and get my life back in the direction I want it to go...

All I ask JR, is that my avatar is ALWAYS slightly bigger then Pizza's....

149x149 is the maximum size I'm comfortable with. Gotta leave some room for the text, no?

Socrates, I liked your wave avatar much better. It looked damn good. Your big-boobied girls just look sad.
