The Macolytes must be catching on to UNIX quicker than expected. I'm in the Willow Bend Apple store, and Terminal is disabled on everything but the new towers. Ran the bench on the towers, but some guy kept going around and shutting down my sessions as I walked from one machine to the next. Surprised

Wow, the Macolytes are improving to match their OS. Very Happy

Shortly after I posted this I discovered:

1) The portly blackshirt killing my terminals was killing aps on all the machines, presumably to render them more snappy;

and

2) The one kid in the store who seemed somewhat UNIX savy (and the only one there who knows jack about OS X Server) didn't know about the openssl speed test. He thought it was pretty neat.

In retrospect, it seems I was overestimating the Apple Store's deviousness, though I still don't know why they had terminal disabled on all the slow machines but not the towers.

I will give them this: Apple lets you screw with their demo models more than any vendor I've ever seen.

Edit: I should add that, as expected the dual 867 runs these routines around twice as fast as my single 400, the differnce being that the speed doesn't degrade when you have a bunch of other aps running. The creamy smoothness of SMP in action. I was also interested to see that Virtual PC 5, despite supposedly being coded for SMP, is still pretty slow, perhaps somewhat slower than the old 50% rule of thumb.

Screw VirtualPC. Give Remote Desktop Connection a try. I just showed it to the Mac guy at the local CompUSA. It looked like he was going to crap his pants in excitement. As long as you have an available PC handy, it's great. www.mactopia.com

Remote Desktop? Is that anything like Terminal Services? Very Happy

JD, you were saying on Ars that it was as slow as Dan Quayle doing addition. What gives? Is it as slow as VPC?

I need VPC or Bochs or something if I ever buy the iBook that has my name on it. Bochs is free, but the last time I looked at it, it was barely operational.

I don't think I've ever said anything regarding Dan Quayle, ever. Must have been someone else.

Personal experience:
VirtualPC running XP on a 2x1Ghz G4 with 256 DDR = fairly slow. Like, annoyingly slow. Like, I'd much rather pull out an old PC, reformat it, and put XP on it, slow.
RDC connecting to a PC running XP with decent specs = fairly slow, but better than VirtualPC.

No, I was just making that part up, but I did read something you wrote on Ars about RDC being a little unhasty.

Good to know. I should give it a try if I reinstall XP. That would open up an extra spot on the KVM though, which might lead me down the path of temptaion and into buying yet another computer I don't really need. Smile

It isn't a replacement for gameing though. (The one true use for Windows. Very Happy )
