...but I have finally vanquished The Dungeon of Doom! I started playing it as a kid, but never got to level 40 of the dungeon, let alone all the way back to level 1 after that. Recently I happened to stumble across a version of the game that runs in OS X under Classic. I promptly began exploring:

Stud Beefpile the wizard met with an early demise. Trying again a few times, I ultimately wound up with Rick Hardslab V, a sage. He progressed rapidly through the dungeon levels, becoming a near-unstoppable force when an early wishing scroll (this is a Roguelike, and all drops are random) granted him plate mail +4, a ring of regeneration +2, and a death blade +4 -- those being the best items in the game.
There were still times along the way when I thought I might be completely screwed. Battling vampires once I reached level 32 resulted in my max HP being drained down to almost nothing. Initially I thought there was no cure, but much perserverance and many reloads of saved games led to me finding the "life potion," the only potion that restores your max HP to its nominal level.
Upon reaching level 40 and digging through the boulders that guarded the Orb of Carnos, I claimed my prize only to cast identify on it and learn that it was merely a plastic ball! Gah! I ransacked level 40 but found nothing. In frustration, I reloaded my game, came to a new (randomly generated) level 40 from my save at level 39, dug through the boulders, identified the orb, and presto! The genuine article.

Well, whatever. The in-game rumours told me that there were two orbs, but I don't know why I found the fake one once and the real one the second time. And what happens after you find the orb? Well, you battle the Dark Wizard, of course! I mean, whose dungeon did you think it was? He made himself invisible and used wands of fire, ice, and lighting against me, but to no avail. My death blade +4 proved too much, and he was overwhelmed.
My ascent from level 40 to level 1 was triumphant. Monsters swarmed me and I left a trail of their blood and entrails in my wake. I exited the dungeon with the Orb of Carnos and more than 600,000 gp in loot, taking my place with other mighty heroes in the Hall of Legends.
Victory is mine!

Thanks, AYB! Finishing the game was very satisfying.
Plus, playing that game again was a total nostalgia trip. Took me back to my childhood and my parents' 512k Mac, the first machine I ever gamed on. Dark Castle, Dungeon of Doom, Continuum, Crystal Quest, Moriarty's Revenge, Glider, Glypha...

Very cool. Congratulations. Once in a while I'll play some old game I played when I was younger. The nostalgic feeling is intense, especially when it reminds you of your youth. Makes you feel younger and more alive.

Adventure.
I still have it, and the requisite Apple ][e/gs.
It was definately rouge-like, building the walls with # and whatnot, but I've never bothered to find out much about it. (like how you win or what the point is. )

I have very fond memories of the Apple IIe.... nothing will ever top Below the Root bitches I also managed to finally beat that one just a couple years ago, about 15 years after I played it originally. I'm currently gearing up for another shot at beating "Time Bandit".... though I doubt that attempt will be quite so successful considering the immense difficulty of the game. |

I love those old adventure/rpg games.
I've never ever been able to legitamitely (sp?) finish any version of Rogue I've ever played. Even with expanded save game capability that comes with newer ports, still haven't been able to do it. You just have to be REALLY lucky I guess.
The copy I cut my teeth on (Rogue.exe, for DOS) allowed 1 save game, and deleted the file when you loaded from it. After a while, we got clever and would save game, exit rogue, make a copy of the file, then open Rogue, but that cumbersome process never really helped us much.

I was never able to beat Spectre. *doffs cap*
(I assume we're talking about the 3D wireframe tank game, right?)

Finishing old games is always awesome.
One day I hope to finish Ultima V.

That'd be the one, yes.
And I never beat it either, but I sure as hell had fun trying.

Come to think of it, can it be beaten? Maybe it just got harder and harder and harder until it was physically impossible...

I have a boxed set called "Utlimat: The Second Trilogy". IV, V, and VI. I remember playing 6 and just stealing everything. Such a vast game it was.

I have that boxed set as well. It came with a Symbol of the Codex or something.
