 |
|
This is from my own stats for pegasus3d.com.
Code: |
Firefox 1.6 No 40 0 %
Firefox 1.4.1 No 781 0.8 %
Firefox 1.4 No 1211 1.2 %
Firefox 1.0.7 No 8750 9 %
Firefox 1.0.6 No 4701 4.8 %
Firefox 1.0.5 No 171 0.1 %
Firefox 1.0.4 No 3225 3.3 %
Firefox 1.0.3 No 278 0.2 %
Firefox 1.0.2 No 910 0.9 %
Firefox 1.0.1 No 152 0.1 %
Firefox 1.0 No 901 0.9 %
|
What's the deal? And there are smaller numbers on Firefox < 1.0. And there's still a guy using Firebird!
Isn't it, like, important to upgrade, and some junk? You know, the whole security patch thing?

It is not Intarweb Expl0der so it's completely secure by default.

Bunch of reasons. People are lazy. Even if they go to all the trouble of downloading a different browser and installing it, still lazy. I'm like 3-4 versions behind on my laptop, but more up to date on the machines that I always use.
Plus, not everyone uses FF just because "It's not IE." I honestly would have no reason to use it if not for the fact that middle-click is open a new window and if I knew of an IE sidebar like Sage (RSS checker, awesome.) I don't count browser "shells" as real options so avant and maxithon or whatever were right out from the start.
What's the spread like on the IE side? I don't suppose they're all on 6?

I use Firefox a lot, and I like to test and help if I can. Remember at one time Safari was not the greatest browser (relative to Firefox). Now that Safari is a lot better, and that I can't live without spell check, I use safari more often. However, I still test out Firefox's various builds (trunk and branch) and see how OSY (plus other forums) looks on it. Just helping out the Firefox team in my own little way.
By the way:

Firefox 1.4 No 1211 1.2 % |
Are all beta/alpha builds. 1.6 should actually be 1.5.2 alpha. There is no release of Firefox 1.4.x as far as I'm aware.

The non-6 and 7 IE stats are quite amazingly low.

I forgot all about that. The highest FF build is 1.0.7, the stuff over 1.4 is the full Mozilla suite with the email and whatever. Not the same.

To how Firefox development is going: The Burning Edge gives a decent summary and frequent updates. Plus links to various types of builds: optimized for processor types, branch, trunks, nightlies, hourlies, etc., etc.

Nope, the trunks are identifying themselves as 1.6; the branch is 1.4.

However, 1.4.1 is actually 1.5. beta 2 build for the developers. The reason for the difference is to do with the extensions and some other stuff. All can be found at the burning edge.

What are the safari stats?
Edit: Oh, and don't forget people change the identifier for their non-IE browsers to IE 5/6. I can understand because some websites say I need IE before I can go further and view the amateur hand held camera shot porn. How lame is that? Gah. Usually, as I despise web developers like that I ignore the website. So I'm not one of the people faking IE at all.

So are they skipping all the way from 1.0.7 (which very much is the latest "real" realease of FF) to 1.4.something for the next realease? Just because?

It's more to do with how the developers are both pacing and releasing mile stone releases of Firefox with a purpose. Since it's open sourced, we're seeing all the development in between which looks all confusing. However, if you check out the actual developer discussions, you'll see it fairly organized. As far as I can remember, the developers do want the next major firefox release to sport significant changes. The current versions 1.0.x have been security fixes imported from the new branch development.
If you really need to know, check out the forums and read the developer discussions. It'll make more sense then I can explain in a post.

I use various random versions of the full Mozilla on Irix and Linux and FreeBSD so some of those would be me. And I don't give a flying fuck about security, life's too short

It's worth mentioning that IE 6.0 has been out a VERY long time so the comparison isn't really fair especially since Windows XP shipped with IE 6.0 by default many years ago. It would be more interesting if you could tell what percentage of IE 6.0 users had all of the current hotfixes installed.
I think part of the problem with upgrading FireFox is that its a pain in the ass. The automated update notification works but then I've got to download an installer and screw with that. Whereas with Windows Update its a nice integrated process that pretty much does all the work for me. |

Speaking of Windows Update.
While I've got automatic important update-without-asking shit turned on (duh) I hadn't actually visited windowsupdate.com to get the applications and stuff updates for ages. I did so yesterday and ticked the boxes for all kinds of cool stuff including a new nVIDIA graphics card driver, which I didn't even know you could get from there. So it installed it all and blah, and rebooted... in 640x480 AND FOUR BIT COLOUR.
Fine I thought. I'll change it back.
THE SLIDER DIDN'T GO ABOVE 800x600. And if I set 32bit depth it pinged back to 640x480. Which looks QUITE SILLY on a widescreen laptop.
Fine I thought. I'll get the latest drivers from nVIDIA. So I did. The installer refused to believe I had an nVIDIA card.
FINE.
I hit Update Driver and browsed to the new driver. Nope. I browsed to an older driver I was using before. Okaaay... reboot... NOTHING CHANGED.
MOTHERFUCKER.
I had to hit uninstall driver, reboot to get a generic VGA adapter, and install an older nVIDIA driver. Took about an hour.
THINGS LIKE THIS REALLY PISS ME OFF.
On the upside the Synaptics driver updated fine... oh wait, no it didn't, I had to change all the settings back to how I like them. But at least the mouse doesn't jump over to the scrollbar when you use the scroll area on the side of the trackpad any more. That was really silly and made me think it was doing something HORRIBLE to make it work.
I need OS X on this thing...

Never download drivers from Windows Update unless you were planning on reinstalling anyway. Especially not video drivers (the others at least have a chance of working). |

Upgrading display drivers has always annoyed the hell out of me. They should be so much more automatic than they are. There should be no uninstalling necessary!

Quoted for great truth and bolded, underlined, and italicized for great emphasis!
I have yet to have a video driver from WU that actually worked... And what's really a PITA is having to boot to safe mode, uninstall the driver, reboot into regular mode, reinstall old driver, reboot for driver install. Major PITA...

I guess I've just been lucky then. Of course, the only WU drivers I've ever installed have been for crappack OEM Intel cards, or occasionaly an ATi.
What's amusing though, is installing a network card update over TS and becoming concerned when the screen freezes and never updates again. It causes a raised eyebrow until you realize you're being a complete douche and then reconnect. Only done that... twice.
