A/V question, with lots of smammy background because I'm verbose and because I don't want people telling me "Forget about the sub, get a stereo system....."

I have a powered sub that typically gets used on my computer (with a set of speakers).

I just moved and since I now have a proper living room, I was all ready to set up my entire entertainment system, possibly w/ surround sound. I was really excited.

So I set everything up, great. That lasted a few days because my damn kids won't leave the gear alone, and climb on it or break into the cabinet. Oh its fine when I'm around to yell at them, but once I'm out the door its open season on the fancy gear and they fuck shit up. I was worried most for the DVD player, since they could easily break off the tray, or my tuner, which has a nice big volume knob that they love to crank, meanwhile I come home and turn everything on and it sounds like a train wreck....

So I took everything down, leaving the TV and digital cable box in the living room. I hooked the tuner up to my PC line out so I can have some high-wattage loving while in my basement office.

So anyway I tucked this powered sub in behind the TV, hooked it up to the audio L/R outputs on the TV, and set its base and volume level.

But it won't match the volume of the TV. In fact, it stays at the volume that I set on IT, doesn't change with the TV.

So my question is, is my sub just too stoopid to understand the TV signal, instead relying on its own volume setting? This is a possiblity, since its quite old (4 or 5 years). Should this work with a late model powered sub that DOESN't have its own volume control??

The audio out sockets on TVs are typically are not affected by the TV volume control. Since sane people wouldn't want to use both external speakers and the TV internal speaker. And external systems are assumed to have their own volume control. Ie, you are a sillyhead Smile

Also if you're into hifi geekery, you should only use a sub when the other speakers you're using it with have crossovers suitably matched to the crossover in the sub. Typically the amp has crossovers and seperate outputs for everything, but if it's a powered sub it may well have it's own shit, expecting to be fed the entire full range signal and having outputs for the rest of the speakers.

Tagnutry++;

In other news my tube amps are not behaving. I gave them four new gain stage valves for Christmas, pukka ones which I'm told are new-old-stock Mullards, the same as the originals. A la:

All was well until recently, but now one amp is louder than the other. The being-louder follows two particular tubes. You'd think that broken ones would get quieter... I need to construct a big chart of what combinations do what, but switching them around is a pain in the backside what with them getting so frickin' hot and taking a couple of minutes to warm up each time! Currently running with two original forty year old Mullards and two new Harmas, which is not a perfect match but better than before. BTW all this was precipitated by me dropping one of the originals. It looked okay but the vacuum must have leaked out (no pedants) because as soon as it was powered up the filament fucking EVAPORATED and covered the inside of the glass in ash. So much more fun than black boxes, no? Smile

Verbosity++;

Which is exactly what is it.

And yes I am silly, just thought I'd give it a try. Maybe I could fashion a long stick to adjust the sub volume as I change the volume on the TV. Or I'll just take the bloody thing off. My wife doesn't like it anyway. Very Happy
