|

We were wondering if cell phones from America would work in Europe, without needing a separate provider. Anyone know? (Does the question even make sense?)

Maybe... first you need a triple band gsm phone, not sure if double band would work (gsm runs on different frequency bands in us/europe/asia), then your network needs an agreement with a network in europe, which they very probably have. Then it might work. |

I concur with vc. Most U.S. cell phone companies will rent out European phones for short periods, which may be your best option. |

Thanks for the response. I'm not looking to go to Europe and I don't even own a cell phone. My roomies and I were just curious.

Indeed you do. we'd standardised on GSM (albeit on two seperate frequencies), back when you backwards americans were still faffing about with analogue cel phones...
then when you finally did drag yourselves out of the dark ages, you went and picked a bunch more incompatible frequency bands...

Europe uses frequencies of 900 and 1800mhz while the US uses 1900.
Why? Oh, just because the military uses 900 and 1800, thats why.
